Ik heet Anne, zei ze, Anne Frank
Jacqueline van Maarsen
Memoirs of a Dutch Jew born in 1929, whose French mother had converted to Judaism upon her marriage. The family lived in Amsterdam from 1928. After the Nazi occupation, van Maarsen was required to attend the Jewish Lyceum, where she met Anne Frank and became her best friend. On 6 June 1942 Anne and her family disappeared, supposedly having emigrated to Switzerland. Van Maarsen learned the truth only after the war, when she met Anne's father. Regarding the van Maarsens, her mother succeeded in persuading the authorities to cancel her conversion, thus making her daughters non-Jews. The family survived the war in the Netherlands, but her father lost his entire side of the family.
